This can be shocking news for the parent, but the most important thing is to be accepting of your child. Your child is still the same person they were before you found out about it. It might be helpful for you both to try and educate yourself on the subject matter. However, the most important is to show your child that you support them and are open to conversation. Depending on a person, your child might want to discuss some topic with you or simply wants you to be informed but not engaged. Do not deny your child’s feelings and be respectful of their experience. If you don’t understand something, ask question, look for information, but never disregard the feeling or experiences of your child.
